The Practice
He begins not with the material, but with the shadow
Will Budgett is a self-taught sculptor who works in a way almost no other artist does. Using scrap industrial waste — rigid, angular, often brutal — he welds each piece in direct response to the silhouettes being cast in real time, chasing the fluid lines of dancing figures through light projected onto surrounding surfaces.
The finished sculpture may appear fractured and abstract in daylight. Illuminate it correctly, and it reveals its hidden choreography. His bronze and resin sculptures, drawing inspiration from the grace of ballet, have been exhibited across the UK, USA, New Zealand, Spain and Kyrgyzstan.
Budgett’s work sits at the intersection of the industrial and the elegant, the visible and the hidden. It asks a question that lands differently on every person who encounters it: how does something so raw birth such grace?
