He is entirely, stubbornly, self-made —
which is precisely why his work belongs here.
The Practice
Figures that hover somewhere between light and dark, focused and unfocused, present and disappearing
Keith Maiden never went to art college. He went to work instead, to support his family. He picked up a brush again in his thirties — self-taught, starting from scratch. Within three years, Washington Green Fine Art had signed him. Four consecutive sold-out solo exhibitions followed. Twenty-five sold-out limited edition series.
Using traditional oil painting methods and a glazing technique, Maiden builds figurative portraits of extraordinary depth. His titles don’t leave much ambiguity about what he’s examining: Wake Up and Smell the Corruption. Crude Reality. Avarice Egocentric. Work that interrogates greed, power, civil unrest, and the fractures running through modern society.
Look longer, and the layers reveal themselves. Messages and symbols embedded in the shadows. A painting that rewards patience in a world that rarely asks for it.
Maiden is now also moving his signature style into equestrian art — capturing the depth and soul of horses in a way very different from the norm. These much sought-after works are at the moment only available through Chiaroscuro Gallery.
